Please note revisions to our remaining April hikes!
Spring is finally showing it’s sunny face and we have many walks scheduled for basking in the season’s glory. Please join us for one…. or two… or more!
Saturday, April 6, 10 am at Glen Providence Park
TTM will join up as the knowledgeable Friends of Glen Providence Park lead a walk through Media’s woodsy gem. The primary themes are park history and “Spring Ephemerals”. These are the lovely little flowers and plants that appear in early spring then disappear back into the ground as the season advances. If you don’t get outside in the woods at just the right time, you will miss the sweet beauty of bloodroot, the shy trout lily, and the robust and noisome skunk cabbage. Rain date is Sunday, April 7. Check for weather updates on the GPP website or Facebook page.
Saturday, April 13, 2 pm in Historic Rose Valley
Did you know that Rose Valley was a vibrant Arts and Crafts community in the early 20th century? Did you know it’s home to two different wildlife preserves? Or that most of the borough is a nationally recognized historic district?
You can learn about all of this and more as we traipse the trails and byways of the borough led by long-time Rose Valley resident Ira Josephs. The area is hilly and the trails are rustic, so be prepared for mud and moisture. We plan to explore the history and nature of the area and take in Hedgerow Theater, Saul Nature Preserve, the Rose Valley pool and many other sites. The hike will be canceled and rescheduled in case of bad weather.
Meet at the Moylan Rose Valley Train Station early so we can start walking at 2 pm. We expect to take about 2 hours. Weather permitting.
Wednesday, April 17, 5:30 pm in Media Borough
Join us for a mid-paced walk around Media Borough and the immediate surrounds. We will start and end at Plum Street Mall and, if desired, gather for refreshments along State Street afterwards. Route and distance are TBD, but are expected to be 2-3 miles. If you have a route you’d like to pursue, let us know! Led by Ellen Morfei.
Thursday, April 25, 8 am, Natural Lands Trust Bird Walk at Hildacy Farm
TTM will join this NLT walk where we will meet the many birds of Hildacy including the Wood Duck, Belted Kingfisher, Red-tailed Hawk, and more. Preserve Manager and expert birder Mike Coll will lead this weekly walk. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and bring your water bottle. No preregistration is necessary. Walks will meet in the parking lot at Hildacy. We will proceed in misty conditions but cancel in case of downpour or lightening. Check the NLT website for updates. NOTE: post-walk brunch is canceled.
Saturday, April 27, 10 am at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Tinicum
NOTE: Only the 4 mile hike is planned. TTM walkers can choose between a 4 mile walk or extend to 9 miles. Join walk leader Paul Sheldon as we explore this diverse wetlands ecosystem in the shadow of the Philadelphia Airport. The land is flat and the 4 mile loop is mostly covered in cinder. The extended 9 mile loop is also flat, but the trail is less well-established and can be muddy. The site is loaded with birds and has many observation areas and a few blinds, so you may want to bring your binoculars. Meet at the main entrance of the Refuge at 86th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia in the Visitor Center. Weather permitting.
