Gene Baur, Co-founder and President of Farm Sanctuary, will discuss how industrial farming systems are not only detrimental to the animals and our personal health, but to the environment. This discussion reveals how our individual choices can play a role in combating environmental degradation and help preserve our planet and those who inhabit it. Gene has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by TIME magazine. He was a pioneer in undercover investigations and instrumental in passing the first U.S. laws to ban inhumane factory farming practices.
Also, as an author he has written two national bestselling books; Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food in 2008 and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day, in 2015.
Gene has a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University, and is a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Gene’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion about sustainable eating and the vegan movement in Philadelphia.
Jack Griffin is the founder of Metropolis Farms, North America’s first vegan certified farm. He also recently founded the first vertical farming school in the world. He is the inventor of Metropolis Farms ultra efficient revolutionary technologies. Metropolis Farms is presently focused on making Philadelphia the first vertical farming city in the world.
Rachel Black is the Philadelphia Grassroots Director at The Humane League – an international non-profit dedicated to farm animal protection. In Philadelphia, Rachel distributes informational literature on factory farming, pro-veg literature, and gives free presentations on the impacts of animal agriculture to high school and college students as well as other community institutions.
Richard Landau and Kate Jacoby, chefs/owners of the outstanding Philadelphia restaurant Vedge,1221 Locust St. Rich has been at the forefront of the vegetarian dining scene since he opened his first restaurant, Horizons, in 1994, where Kate joined him in 2001. They opened Vedge together in 2011. Rich has co-authored three cookbooks, including the most recent, Vedge: 100 Plates Large and Small that Redefine Vegetable Cooking.
