Electric Vehicles National Drive Electric [NDEW] Week is based on the idea that today’s potential electric vehicle consumers need to hear straight from experienced drivers, and see the benefits up close of quiet, clean, zero emission vehicles.
National Drive Electric Week, September 8-16, 2018, is a nationwide celebration to heighten awareness of today’s widespread availability of plug-in electric vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric plug-in electric vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, and more. They are fun to drive, are less expensive to operate and more convenient to fuel than gasoline internal combustion engine [ICE] vehicles, are better for the environment, promote local jobs, and eliminate personal dependence on foreign oil.
“At first, consumers may have been motivated by the fact that these vehicles are zero emissions. Now, we’re getting consumers who just know these are better cars—more fun to drive, lower maintenance and more responsive,” said Joel Levin, executive director of Plug In America. “It’s an extremely exciting time to see the electric vehicle movement evolve, and see the hundreds of thousands of people who are not just fans of these cars, but dedicated to a better world.”
Outside of agriculture & diet, “Transportation is currently the single largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, but with electric vehicle sales rising 37% this past year, and more chargers in the ground and EVs on the road than ever before, it’s clear there are no detours on the road to clean energy,” said Gina Coplon-Newfield, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All program director. “National Drive Electric Week events help drive away the dirty smog and soot that comes out of ICE vehicles’ tailpipes by helping people make the switch to clean cars.”
In 2017, a record number of events: 276 events, 262 cities, 6 countries and all 50 U.S. states and Washington, DC, with more than 8,000 ride and drives.
Started in 2011 as National Plug In Day with the simple idea to hold simultaneous events across the country on the same day, by popular demand we have expanded to an entire week of events and changed the name to emphasize the thing we all want to do: drive electric. We expect National Drive Electric Week 2018 will again grow to include more events in more cities with more drivers reaching out to share the many advantages of driving electric with the public.
Each event is led by local plug-in drivers and advocates. Plug In America, Sierra Club, and the Electric Auto Association serve as the national team providing support to the events in communities throughout the country.
