America’s First Fair Trade Town Committee of Media is hosting Guatemalan Fair Trade artisan, Gloria Chonay. On a 2-week tour of the Mid-Atlantic states organized by Fair Trade Towns USA, Gloria will be in Media for the day as she makes her way to the Fair Trade Federation USA Conference in Durham, NC. She will be making 2 public appearances in Media, one at Ten Thousand Villages and one at Earth & State.
Gloria Chonay is an artisan and leader of Mayan Hands, a Fair Trade cooperative of weavers and basket-makers in the western highlands of Guatemala. Although recognized worldwide for their artistry and talent, most Mayan weavers live in extreme poverty. Mayan Hands seeks to create a market for these artisans so they can provide for their families while continuing to live within the culture they cherish.
Fair Trade is a comprehensive approach to social, economic and environmental empowerment, and sustainability among farming communities in the developing world. Gloria’s visit will give our residents a deeper understanding of the workings and impact of Fair Trade.
