On Friday, July 5, at 7p.m., the 2014 film, “MANDELA, Long Walk to Freedom” , will be screened at the First-Friday Free Large-Screen Film Series held at the Peace Center of Delaware County, 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, PA.
Doors open at 6:30p.m. for light refreshments.
On February 11, 1990, people around the world watched as Nelson Mandela, with a clenched-fist sign of solidarity raised triumphantly, left prison where 27 years of his life had been taken. The man was unbroken, without compromise, and unrelenting in his commitment to ending the brutal racist system of apartheid in his nation, South Africa.
A half-century of lawful white-minority rule over the overwhelming black majority was about to end.
Mandela was free!
Mandela was free!
On this Fourth of July weekend, you are invited to see an uplifting film about freedom and the man who most represented a movement of costly struggle and hope for millions of people in South Africa—black and white—and inspired millions more around the world.
Golden Globe-winner Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela in this in-depth and internationally acclaimed biopic that portrays the South African leader from his rural childhood through his long imprisonment to his election as the country’s first black president.
“MANDELA, Long Walk to Freedom”, 2014. 146 minutes. Rated PG-13. Stars Idris Elba and Naomie Harris. English, Xhosa, and Afrikaans, with English subtitles. Director: Justin Chadwick. Screenplay: William Nicholson, based on the book Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. United Kingdom and South Africa. Music: Alex Heffes and U2.
Immediately following the film showing, for those who can remain, there will be a short ceremony and reception in which something called the “MANDELA AWARD” will be given to Beth Centz and Robert M. Smith, founders of the Brandywine Peace Community nearly forty-five years ago. The award is given to a person, persons, or group that has acted for justice over a significant period of time. Past “MANDELA AWARD” recipients have included: Sylvia Metzler, health care professional, local activist, and war resister; Leonard Peltier, Native American political prisoner; and Sandy Levinson, founder and director, Cuban Studies Center in NYC.
The First-Friday free film series at the Peace Center of Delaware County is organized monthly by the Brandywine Peace Community.
