The Lady tells the true-life story of Burmese, now Myanmar, pro-democracy activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi. It’s an epic love story and tale of nonviolent resistance set against the backdrop of brutal repression.
Aung San Suu Kyi (portrayed by Michelle Yeoh), the woman at the core of Myanmar democracy movement, and her British husband Michael Aris, endure long separations under a vicious regime. Their commitment to each other and their struggle for democracy exact a high price in personal sacrifice. She spends 15 years under house arrest.
The Lady was written by Rebecca Frayn, who interviewed key figures among Aung San Suu Kyi’s compatriots, reconstructing the story of national heroine. This gripping narrative, paired with the masterful direction of internationally acclaimed director, Luc Besson, make it an inspiring bio-pic.
Distressing reports last fall from Myanmar raise serious questions about Aung San Suu Kyi’s commitment to human rights for all.
The Atlantic last September began its article stating “Like most stories out of Burma, the recent spate of ethnic cleansing of a Muslim minority sect would be unlikely to receive much Western attention—were it not for Aung San Suu Kyi, the dissident-turned-de-facto-ruler. But unlike in the past, the stories about her are not so flattering now. In fact, they seem directly at odds with the moral leadership that won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991…” .
