Transition Town Media (TTM) is hosting our 4th Monthly Potluck on Monday, May 21, 6-9pm, in our new TTM Neighbor Space on Lemon St between State and Baker St in Media, PA 19063 (look for the TTM signs). Come join us in a community space where all neighbors can come, break bread together, and engage openly, honestly, and positively about topics of interest throughout the year.
Tonight, we will examine an issue that in many ways has underpinned our society, for the most part without our realizing it. Colonizing native cultures has been a practice of “civilized” societies for centuries and led to the subjugation and annihilation of millions of native peoples, their lands, and their culture. This mind-set of “divine destiny” continues to this day and has led to massive injustices against indigenous people around the world as well as an indifference to the damage we are causing to the earth. Let’s unpack how this worldview has led to our unwitting compliance with social and ecological injustices and how to leave this painful history behind.
We are honored to have as our guests several individuals who have immersed themselves in this issue: Sara Jolena Wolcott, M. Div., a healer, artist, teacher, and minister who has worked for a decade on the connections between colonialization, climate change, and poverty, will talk about her work and insights. Joining us from Pendle Hill are Lina Blount and John Meyer who have put together a series of monthly talks, culminating in a weekend workshop on healing relationships with indigenous peoples. Also joining us will be teacher and social justice advocate, Arla Patch, who worked on a Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Native children in Maine.
Remember to BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything) to help make these events waste-free. Please bring your own plates, cups, utensils, napkin for the meal, as well as a dish to share and your favorite beverage. Beer and wine are fine. The event is free, but we appreciate donations to help us cover travel costs for our guests. And most importantly, bring your voice and your ideas!
Keep your 3rd Mondays open for these get-togethers. We look forward to connecting with you every month! For more information, contact us at info@transitiontownmedia.org.
