“Jimmy’s Hall”, 2015, 109 min. Directed by Ken Loach. Rated PG-13 for drug use, sexual content, nudity, language, some violence. In 1921 political activist and free-thinker Jimmy Gralton builds a dance hall in rural Ireland, where young people come to learn, argue, dream . . . but above all to dance and have fun. As the hall’s popularity grows, its socialist and free-spirited reputation catch the attention of the Church and politicians who force Jimmy to flee and the hall to close. Eleven years later Jimmy returns to Ireland from the U.S. and reopens the hall, in spite of continuing tensions.
Aware-winning director Ken Loach is well-know for films showing the impact of social issues on the lives of working people. He hits the mark again in this moving tale of the impact of the political on the personal, of injustice and joy.
