Transition Town Media is holding a “Green Sunday” holiday event from Noon to 5 pm on Sunday, December 2nd in the Media Community Center. In contrast to the well-known Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this event will ring in the holidays with hand-made-by-you and hand-me-down gifts while celebrating local craftspeople and businesses.
Green Sunday features:
- Baskets full of local goodies from Media businesses and craftspeople to inspire your local holiday shopping and maybe even give you a treat if you win a raffled basket;
- Swaps of used holiday decorations, supplies, and re-giftable gifts;
- Tasty holiday potluck;
- Collaborative weaving project and raffle;
- Holiday stress reduction workshop:
- Handmade soap making demonstration;
- Loads of workshops for you to craft customized gifts made with your own heart and hands; and
- Handmade wares for sale from our wonderful local workshop leaders.
Green Sunday and most of our workshops will be offered in the spirit of the gift. Instead of charging an explicit fee, participants are asked to provide a gift in return that suits their ability and inspiration. This may be done in the way your completed craft is given, in an act of service to your community, in a shift of your perspective, with money, or any other way you imagine. Cash gifts to Transition Town Media will be used to cover the cost of workshop materials, event organization, and future TTM initiatives. More elaborate workshops may carry a specific fee.
Doors will open at 10:30 for workshop sign-ups; set-up from crafts sellers; and potluck and swap contributions only. Workshops begin at noon.
Some Green Sunday Specifics:
Local Gift Baskets
Come see our sample local gift baskets and get some great ideas of how to shop local and give great gifts this holiday season. Be sure to grab our idea list for acquiring locally-sourced and crafted holiday goodies from local craftspeople, food producers, and businesses. And add your favorites if we missed them. Buy a raffle ticket and a chance to win one of these bountiful local business baskets!
There are three themes to our Green Sunday swaps: Holiday Supplies, Holiday Decorations, and Re-Giftables. Like all TTM swaps, you are invited to bring or take what inspires you. There is no expectation of even exchanges. We wish to share our abundance.
Holiday Supplies: If you’re oversupplied with ribbon, tags, gift bags, boxes, or wrapping paper (or maybe just tired of what you have) bring it to share with another family. If you need something new for your home, come explore what holiday supplies your neighbors have offered!
Holiday Decorations: Tired of your Santa soap dispenser? Pass it along to your friend or neighbor at this swap. Looking for a new tree topper? Maybe you’ll find it on our swap table. There will surely be surprises for you to explore.
Regiftables: Received a gift that’s just “not you”? Surely, it’s perfect for someone else. Please bring your new unused items to our regifting swap table. And maybe you’ll find exactly what your Aunt Penny would love.
What’s a holiday celebration without some food to graze on. Please bring some treats – sweet or savory – to share.
