TTM and Chester Housing Authority are teaming up to put DelCo small businesses first!
It’s one of our newest projects, “Priority: DelCo Thrive,” and our first excursion was to Chester’s Red Brick Cafe on Sunday, March 21, 2021. The idea was conceived by Ulysses Slaughter of the Chester Housing Authority, who asked Transition Town Media to partner with them on this initiative to support our diverse small businesses—the real heart of our economy.
It will help our county’s small businesses, owned and operated by our friends and families, thrive at a time when they most need support.
We are gathering hundreds of people to pledge to spend at least $20 each month at a pre-selected, locally-owned small business or restaurant in one of Delaware County’s 49 municipalities. In March, we landed in Chester; in April, we’ll be in Aston, then Media, and so on. We’re asking people to go to each town, or as many as you can, not just your own or the ones you’re familiar with, so that all our towns are empowered by this infusion of cash and interest. And we’ll get to know our neighbors better.
As well as selecting one local business each month to support, the DelCo Thrive team will let you know what other nearby businesses and points of interest are in the town you’re visiting. Walk around. Get to know the place. Maybe meet someone from another town who also cares about our local economy!
Ready to get started?
Go to PriorityDelcoThrive.com to register for the Delco Thrive campaign, then place your order for a delicious lunch at our next destination. You’ll have your choice of three or four meal options, each priced at $20, payable through PayPal. Don’t worry if you don’t have a PayPal account, PayPal will let you use your credit card or checking account. Each lunch date will be on a Saturday or Sunday, between 11AM–2PM.
The order process is very simple. Feel free to order more than one meal and bring your family and friends. You’ll need to select a time slot—any 15-minute slice between 11AM–2PM so that the Cafe staff can have your meal hot and ready for you to pick up when you arrive. You’ll need to wear a mask and respect people’s distance requirements.
Depending on the weather and COVID status, you may be able to eat your meal at the restaurant, either indoors or outside. If not, it will be pick-up only, although we’ll try to identify some nearby spots where you can eat in small groups before you stroll off to tour the town. We intend to keep the event as zero-waste as possible, with compostable take-out containers where possible. Please bring your own utensils and napkin.
Our small businesses have had a rough year. Many are struggling while the giant businesses are raking in money. Let’s put our money where our values are: supporting our county’s small businesses and restaurants! Each one of us can make a huge difference with our collective action and our collective dollars. This is not only a way to support our small businesses, it’s also a way to connect with new people and new communities across our incredible county. The time is right.
