Solving the Climate Crisis—Block by Block
We’re starting a pilot project taking on the Cool City Challenge, a moonshot climate change strategy designed and developed over the past several years by experts in social change. The challenge starts at the block level then builds block by block to neighborhood, city, region, state and beyond with a goal of making all cities carbon-neutral by 2030. See CoolBlock.org for more info.
Households that opt-in will go through a four-month program.
During this time, they will learn ways to develop energy and climate resilience, reduce their carbon footprint, reduce water usage, and create safe, healthy neighborhoods. They can then make changes to their households and block—based on what resonates with them. Many of our existing Transition Town activities and initiatives are included as “action recipes” that come with the program (e.g. composting, gardening, and emergency preparedness…).
We’ve agreed to pilot two blocks in our area this Summer, with more planned for the Fall cohort. It has been exciting to participate in calls with community leaders in Berlin, Germany; Findhorn, Scotland; Swansea, Wales; Phoenix, AZ; and Los Angeles, CA.
