Shane Claiborne will speak about the beauty of non-conformity and the prophetic imagination, and will share stories of contemporary communities which are living out a holy counterculture with remarkable creativity. In reflecting that the Kingdom of God is something that we create here on earth, we will explore the fact that indeed, another world is possible.
This talk is part of the Continuing Rev_l_tion Young Adult Friends conference series sponsored by Pendle Hill, with support from Quaker Earthcare Witness, the Clarence and Lilly Pickett Endowment, the Shoemaker Fund, and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Continuing Rev_l_tion is an annual six-day conference for Young Adult Friends (ages 18-35) centered on the Quaker testimonies, with the mission to provide activist and leadership training, skill-building opportunities, and support for the ministry of those called to live into the intersection of their gifts and the world’s needs. We seek to provide the foundational skills and training to inspire revelation – or nonviolent revolution – as we strive to live in Spirit-led relationship with ourselves, our communities, and the earth.
Shane Claiborne is the visionary leader of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped birth and connect radical faith communities around the world. Shane’s work as a Christian activist and peacemaker has taken him from the streets of Calcutta (where he worked with Mother Teresa), on peace delegations to Afghanistan and Iraq, and to wealthy suburbs around the United States, where he reminds us of how radical Christ’s teachings are. Shane writes and travels extensively, speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus.
