Voices Along the Pipelines: Citizen Art
August 9 – September 8, 2019
In August the Media Arts Council will present a curated community-based art exhibit documenting the human impact of local and national pipeline projects.
Opening Night: Saturday August 10th, 4-7pm
Introduction, Lenni Lenape Water Ceremony Honoring Native Lands, Musical Presentations
Open Mic Night: Thursday August 22nd, 7pm
Residents along the Mariner East Pipelines are invited to come and share their stories, read a poem, sing a song, or listen along.
Film Night: Friday August 23rd, 7pm
Half-Mile, Upwind, On Foot (a film about the Mariner East pipeline resistance) to be followed by a discussion with local filmmaker and director Brian McDermott
Closing Reception and Artist Talk: Saturday Sept. 7th, 4-7pm
Explore “Water Ways” with artist Meg Lemieur and fellow illustrator Bri Barton, who created this collaboratively drawn series of highly detailed pen-and-ink illustrations, showing the effect of the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the surrounding areas.
This exhibit will responsibly serve as a vehicle for civil discourse, awareness, and creative expression to both artists, residents, and community groups in response to the potential risks of new fossil fuel infrastructure. According to musician Yo-Yo Ma, such citizen based works “transcend technique in order to seek out the truths in our world in a way that gives meaning and sustenance to individuals and communities.” This exhibit’s range of talent serves to deepen the conversation and document growing momentum in a greater movement connecting various communities experiencing similar challenges.
The exhibit will include the following groups and citizen artists:
