Media is starting a Composting Program!
Transition Town Media is working with Media Borough to set up a residential weekly kitchen scraps pickup. We’re currently in our first year pilot project with 100 families participating. The plan is to expand it to 220+ for its second year.
Currently, pickups are being done by Kitchen Harvest and taken to Linvilla Orchards to compost. Finished compost is made available to participants on a regular basis! Once the pilots are complete (hopefully in 2020), the pickups will be done by the Borough Public Works program, just like the trash and recycling pickups. The kitchen waste will still go to Linvilla to be composted by Kitchen Harvest.
This project was conceived as a way to reduce the waste generated in Media, making beautifully processed compost with it instead, and thus completing the cycle of fresh food –> kitchen scraps –> compost –> veggie gardens –> fresh food!
